These are my notes to myself - NOT an instruction manual for using UMAP.

First of all.

The first thing is to register and login. https://umap-project.org/

One option that must be selected is which server to host your maps. France chosen.

Then from  https://umap.openstreetmap.fr/ - select CREATE a map or browse your dashboard, and select one to continue editing.

The menu on the right hand side [relates to the map]

The four icons in the upper menu are not needed as the kml is imported.

Using the "Up Arrow" icon - the 2nd on the lower menu.

  • Import your kml: Browse to the location of the kml file, select and import.

Using the "Key" icon - the seventh icon [permissions and editors (people)], set:

  • "Who can view" to "Everyone [public]".
  • Use all other settings as the defaults.

Using the "i" icon - the 1st on the lower right hand side [Edit map name and caption etc], set:

  • the name of the file - a short description. UMAP gives each map a unique number. This can be got when exporting see below.
  • the description of the information e.g. "Location of Blackberry patch's in Linn Park"
  • set the option to make the map a template. NOT a good idea for "working maps". Useful for generating maps with one's own settings.
  • any tags e.g. "hiking"
  • the licence: Note "aucune" is French for none - so choose "No licence set". Alternatives include "Open Licence" and "WTFPL".
  • any credits e.g. the permanent credits e.g. "Linn Park Gentlemen's Walking Club"

Using the 6th icon of two small arrows point to a dot, set the default view stuff:

  • Default zoom: between 13 and 16 is good for Linn Park.
  • Default Latitude: for Linn Park use 55.80422968
  • Default Longitude: for Linn Park use -4.26113963
  • Default View: Select "Fit all data"

The icons for Load Template, Manage Layers [only one layer per map] and Change Tile Layers [colour schemes] are not used. [3rd, 4th and 5th icons]

The 8th icon is for the multitude of Advanced Items. Of these only the User Interface Options are really relevant as they control the left hand menu, and the only changes needed are:

  • Display "Back to Home". Set OFF.
  • Display "Zoom Control". Use default Always.
  • Display "Search Control". Use default Always.
  • Display "the full screen control". Use default Always.
  • Display "Locate Control". Set to "Never".
  • Display "The embed control". This shows the share icon which allows downloading links for the map. See below for left hand menu. Set to "Never" for production map, but hidden for development.
  • Display "the open [data] browser control". Set to "Never".
  • Display "The caption control". This enables the editing and display of the layer. Set to "Never".
  • Display "the print control". Use default Always.
  • Display "the measure control". Set to "Never".
  • Display "the tile layers control". Set to "Never".
  • Allow scroll wheel zoom. Set to default ON.
  • Show Mini map. Set ON. This allows a reduced map for small screens viz mobile phones.
  • Display Scale Control. Set to default ON
  • Display Panel on load. Set to None.
  • Display Popup Footer. Set to OFF.
  • Display Caption Bar. Set to OFF.
  • Display Caption Menus. Set to OFF.
  • Display Layer Switcher. Set to OFF.
The menu on the left hand side [relates to the current layer in the map],

See above which controls what icons / functions are available.

This results in the export [embed control] icon being the one which is needed to create the links needed for displaying maps.

A NOTE on "Inheritance of Properties [viz visibility of icons]". It is NOT clear what is changeable and what is not. Testing has elucidated that all that is actually needed is typically as follows:

<iframe src="https://umap.openstreetmap.fr/en/map/park-entrances-map_1477736#14/55.805894/-4.261979" style="height: 500px; width: 400px; float: right;"></iframe>.

Note to centre the map set the width to 100%.

The Customised and iFrame settings are set in the Embed and link options below the four downloadable links. In effect they replicate the Advanced User Interface Options are relevant. The Embed and Link options are:

  • The Width and Height for Linn Park maps is generally 500px by 500px
  • Full size links for printing are already defined - so Set OFF
  • The next seven options are all set OFF except for Displaying a MiniMap set to ON
  • Do you want to display a panel on load? is set to None
  • The next three options are all set OFF
  • Zoom, Search and Full Screen are all set ON
  • Locate. Embed, Browser and Caption all set to NEVER
  • Print Control is set to ALWAYS
  • The last two options are both set OFF.

There are four exports which are:

  • The map with settings and options as saved, e.g.  https://umap.openstreetmap.fr/en/map/white-bridge-top-wood_1475666 Includes the map name and number.
  • The "short link", e.g. http://u.osmfr.org/m/1475666/ which includes just the map number but loads as above.
  • The customised link, which includes the settings: e.g. https://umap.openstreetmap.fr/en/map/white-bridge-top-wood_1475666#15/55.804875/-4.263039?
    scaleControl=false
    &miniMapControl=true
    &scrollWheelZoom=false
    &zoomControl=true
    &editMode=disabled
    &moreControl=false
    &searchControl=null
    &tilelayersControl=null
    &embedControl=false
    &datalayersControl=false
    &onLoadPanel=none
    &captionBar=false
    &captionMenus=true
  • The iFrame code: which is just the customised link in an iFrame so needs size [width: 500 px, height: 500px ] and full screen [OFF] options. Neither of these full export versions are required  - see above.

Adding the zoom and map centre for display is as just a matter of adding #zoom/Latitude/Longitude.

The other attributes to the style can be used as needed:
margin-top: 40px; margin-right: 40px; margin-left: 40px; margin-bottom: 40px; float: left; [or right].
